“All great painting is about attempting to stop time, to make memory physical . . . This is the painting of love.”

Simon Schama

 This session will be recorded.

This month’s The Art of Seeing will explore the ways in which the artist seeks to capture the intertwined themes of time and memory through one work of art.

Following on from the Courtauld Gallery visit, this session journeys back to the 19th century, inviting reflection on how a swiftly changing industrial world—and its evolving sense of time—found expression in the unique language of art. The tension between emerging recreational spaces and traditional ways of life, alongside factories spilling onto the natural landscape, found expression in new perceptions of time, space and subject matter in painting. This session will consider the memories that are evoked through the work of art, not only of that era for the artist but also for us today.

This session offers a tripartite approach of theory, practice and reflection and you are encouraged to participate as much or as little as you like.
