“. . . those who are illuminated should be filled full with Divine Light, ascending,
to the contemplative state and power with the most pure eyes of the mind . . .’
Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite
This session will be recorded.
In this month’s The Art of Seeing, we will be exploring the idea of other-than-human beings, in the form of angels. It may seem an odd concept to modern minds to contemplate the notion of angels, or a particular angel, but in Christian, Jewish, Hindu and Islamic Scriptures, angels are important messengers, and upheld with a belief in the reality of their mysterious existence/s. Drawing on the late 5th century / early 6th century theologian and Neoplatonic philosopher, Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite’s Celestial Hierarchy, we will be guided with just one work of art to understand angels more deeply, how artists knew what angels should look like, what the hierarchies are and originate from, and even to deepen our encounter with angels; not to define them in a materialist sense, but to honour them in the realms in which they exist – a non-material world which reaches us through dreams, visions, and feelings. Perhaps our human calling, prayer and contemplation of angels may re-awaken something in both us and them . . .
This session offers a tripartite approach of theory, practice and reflection and you are encouraged to participate as much or as little as you like.
