“Through the fact of our embodied nature, through art and through religion,
the right hemisphere might still be able to make a comeback.’
Dr Iain McGilchrist
This session will be recorded.
In this month’s session on The Art of Seeing, we will be taking the framework of Dr Iain McGilchrist’s discoveries about the left and right hemispheres of the brain when looking at one work of art. Contrary to popular science, McGilchrist demonstrated that the left hemisphere is not the all-knowing, sensible hemisphere and the right hemisphere is not just fluffy and all about emotions. In fact, as McGilchrist has reiterated through his work, both hemispheres are responsible for almost everything. It is not what they do, but how they do it, the quality of attention they pay towards the world that enables us to see in two very distinct ways. We will take McGilchrist’s approach with our work of art. As he emphasises, we need both hemispheres in order to see works of art but with primacy given to the right hemisphere, which ultimately allows us to both look at and see through surface appearances into a realm beyond. As usual the work of art will not be revealed until the evening but I can tell you that it has been created in the spirit of intuitively understanding the different and effective ways of seeing both hemispheres make possible.
This session offers a tripartite approach of theory, practice and reflection and you are encouraged to participate as much or as little as you like.
